What is a Doula?

Doulas are a non-medical assistant in during prenatal care, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

Doulas are trained support persons who attend to the emotional and physical comfort needs of laboring women to smooth the labor process. They do not do clinical tasks but rather use massage, emotional support, educational support and positioning suggestions, etc., to help labor progress as well as possible.

A Doula joins an expectant mother either at her home or in hospital and remains with her through the birth and until a few hours after the birth.

Doulas serve as advocates of their client’s wishes as expressed in the Birth Plan, which they are instrumental in assisting the mother prepare. The Doula provides kindness and comfort to a woman who is in labor, assisting her during one of the most vulnerable times in her life. It is an important job and not one to be taken lightly.

A Doula is not a Midwife. While the Midwifery Model of Care mothers the mother as well, a Midwife performs clinical tasks that a Doula is not trained to do and are outside of the standards of practice for a Doula to perform.

What to Expect: Birth Doula

If you hire me to be your birth doula, you can expect two home visits and my attendance of your birth. Each visit will be two hours long. I will give you a binder of information and resources, we will discuss all your questions, and write your birth plan. Feel free to call and text me with any of your concerns and questions. Of course, in the end, I will attend your birth supporting your every need during that time.

What to Expect: Postpartum Doula

During the first 6 weeks postpartum, you can expect me at your home two days a week. Each day you will have me for four hours to help out with whatever you need. From meal prep, cooking, laundry, or simply caring for your baby while you take a nap or shower. My goal is to help you and your family needs for the day. Any day and time, you are welcome to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Why I Became a Doula...

I am passionate about motherhood. There is nothing that can break us or empower us more than growing and delivering our babies. Unfortunately, I have found pregnancy and childbearing is more often breaking us down. A huge reason for this is because we lack support from our doctors, friends, and even family. Becoming a certified doula has created an opportunity for me to support pregnant mamas more than ever. If you choose me to walk this journey of motherhood with you I would be so honored!
